The origin of Pet Promise actually goes back to a day in 1990 when Anthony Zolezzi, a long-time food-industry executive, noticed the marked distinction between an organic and chemically treated strawberry field. Observing the life of the organic field in radical contrast to the barren appearance of the latter field, Zolezzi decided to devote his talents and expertise to promoting sustainable agriculture. Eventually, this became a mission to save the family farm, an endeavor in which he was joined by Dave Carter, a member and former chairman of the USDA National Organic Standards Board, and Myron Lyskanycz, a Madison Avenue veteran. All three were deeply concerned about the impact of big-business factory farming on the environment and water quality of rural communities, as well as on their economies. They knew that many family farms were raising animals humanely, without hormones or added antibiotics, and were doing their part to care for the environment. However, their inability to get premium prices for those items left over from meat production commonly used to make pet food (referred to as the "trim") made it difficult for them to compete with those commercial farms that market lower-grade pet-food ingredients. |
